Ocean Breeze Retreats hold events at the stunning Caribbean location of Akumal, Mexico. Akumal means "place of the turtle" in native Maya language. It is a small beach community located 75 miles south of Cancun, Mexico, along Mexico's Caribbean Coast.
Akumal is centrally located along The Riviera Maya and close proximity to many Mayan archaeological sites including Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza. This area is famous for sandy white beaches and crystal clear turquois water. Akumal is a nesting place for sea turtles that are often seen.
The world's second largest barrier reef, the Great Maya Reef runs parallel to the coastline and is among the best places in the world for scuba diving and snorkeling. The reef hosts an enormous amount of organisms including more than 65 types of coral and hundreds of fish species.

An Akumal landmark, Casa del Sol is located along Akumal's pristine Yal-Ku Lagoon. It is well known for its great location, privacy and for its funky, eclectic decor. Previously owned by the band The Greatful Dead, Casa del Sol has fabulous murals both inside and outside that highlight the areas Mayan history.
The villa has a hand carved couch and chairs upholstered in a luxurious leopard patterned silk. Colorful silks have been used extensively to cover throw pillows in the living spaces and bedrooms. Many are shaped like reef fish in the bedrooms and make colorful tropical accents along with the lovely handmade quilts for each of the beds. The villa also has hand painted Talavera china dishes that were custom made for the house in a sun motif. Exotic masks and decorations of the folk cultures of the Mexico adorn the walls. The furniture throughout is comfortable and relaxing.
The 4400 square foot Casa del
Sol is a large, comfortable living space. It offers many
amenities including a gorgeous swimming pool and a lagoon side
palapa with plenty of hammocks and lounge chairs. It also has a
newly built
Casa del Sol
waterfall with its own small
dipping pool. The refreshing waterfall is a wonderful place
for a water massage after a swim in the lagoon. There is a rooftop
deck with an ocean view, where you can enjoy being surrounded by
the ocean, the lagoon and the jungle. Access to the lagoon is
very easy, just down the garden path and across your own private
bridge into the cool clear water of Yal-Ku where you can snorkel
with the fish and sea turtles for hours. There are
outdoor showers for rinsing off after snorkeling.
The white sandy beaches of Akumal are just minutes away. There are 35 resident sea turtles plus visiting turtles in the ocean daily. You can also witness the splendor of dolphins swimming and playing in the ocean. Akumal hosts a writer's retreat and there are gift shops with local artifacts as well. Nearby fresh water cenotes offer an amazing swimming and snorkeling adventure.
